"In den Grooten Zalm" and "Den Kleinen Zalm"
are two adjacent buildings on the
Mechelse Zoutwerf and one of the best known and most beautiful city views.
The imposing façade of the fishmonger's house 'In den Grooten
Zalm' was built
between 1530 and 1536. The façade is one of the earliest examples of early
Renaissance in Belgium.
Until the French Revolution it was a craft house for fishmongers.
Afterwards it
became the home of the famous Mechelen painter Willem Geets (1839-1919).
De Zalm recently underwent a gentle restoration of the outer
shell (roofing,
cleaning and restoration of front and side walls and the joinery was restored and
repainted). Work was also done on the stability of the building (the curb molding
was anchored and a concrete beam was realized).
Layout:
The building is very spacious (3 storeys + attic), in excellent
condition and is a
protected monument that lends itself to a beautiful classy redevelopment.
The co-sold unbuilt passage (plot number 393 B) leading to the
Zoutwerf
adjacent to the left side of 'De Zalm' is part of the historic site Couderborg and
also has the status of a protected monument.
